Fire Sprinkler System

In your building, your fire sprinkler system is the single most important fire protection system you can have. Fire sprinkler systems respond to fires in seconds, often putting them out completely or at least knocking them back until the fire department arrives. There are many different types of fire sprinkler systems available, each one designed to protect a different type of building. At SASSECO, we provide full fire sprinkler installation – from piping and fire sprinkler head installation to electrical and plumbing hookups. If necessary, we can even install a new water main and sewer lines or construct a new pump room in your building!

Types of Fire Sprinkler Systems

At SASSECO, we can install any type of fire sprinkler system in your building, including:

Wet Pipe Fire Sprinkler Systems – the most commonly used type of fire sprinkler, wet pipe fire sprinkler systems are a type of sprinkler system that uses automatic sprinkler heads attached to a piping system that comes pre-charged with water from the fire pump. With this type of fire sprinkler system, the fire sprinkler heads open in response to heat and water is discharged instantly after the heads open.

Wet pipe fire sprinkler systems are commonly found in typical office buildings and provide a standard level of fire protection.

Dry Pipe Fire Sprinkler Systems – a dry pipe fire sprinkler system uses fire sprinkler heads that are attached to pipes filled with pressurized air as opposed to water. When the sprinkler heads open, the gas is released, and a valve is opened allowing pressurized water to flow through the pipes and out the open sprinkler heads. While this causes a slight delay in water discharge, it is useful in buildings where water could freeze if kept in the pipes.

Dry pipe fire sprinkler systems are less common than wet pipe fire sprinkler systems because they are more expensive and more complicated. However, they are very useful in certain situations, such as in unheated buildings, parking garages and refrigerated coolers where temperatures get cold enough that water could freeze in the fire sprinkler pipes.

Deluge Fire Sprinkler Systems – a deluge fire sprinkler system uses open fire sprinkler heads attached to a piping system which is itself connected to a water supply by a valve. When the smoke or fire alarm goes off, this valve open and sends water through the pipes and sends water through all of the sprinkler heads at once. Deluge fire sprinkler systems are used in applications where fires could spread quickly unless massive quantities of water are delivered as quickly as possible.

Pre-Action Fire Sprinkler Systems – pre-action fire sprinkler systems are basically a combination of a deluge fire sprinkler system and a wet pipe fire sprinkler system – water enters the pipes via a valve and flows through the sprinkler heads when they are activated by heat.

They are commonly used in spaces containing expensive and valuable equipment that could be damaged by the accidental triggering of the sprinklers.

Types of Fire Sprinkler Systems

When you are thinking about fire sprinkler system installation, you have several options – each will afford you a slightly different level of fire protection suitable for different types of buildings.

Wet Pipe Fire Sprinkler Systems – by far the most common type of fire sprinkler, wet pipe fire sprinklers are found in most homes and standard office buildings. In a wet pipe fire sprinkler, water is kept under pressure and stored throughout the sprinkler pipes and released by heat-activated sprinkler heads. The advantage of having a wet pipe fire sprinkler system is that they activate instantly with no lag time after the fire sprinkler heads open.

Dry Pipe Fire Sprinkler Systems – dry pipe fire sprinkler systems are similar to wet pipe, except the water is not stored in the pipes. Instead, the pipes are filled with pressurized air or nitrogen gas. When the sprinkler heads open, the gas is released, and a valve opens that allows water to flow out through the open fire sprinkler heads. This causes a slight delay (usually only a second) in water discharge, but it is useful in buildings where water could freeze if kept in the pipes.

Deluge Fire Sprinkler Systems – a deluge fire sprinkler system is very similar to a wet pipe fire sprinkler system, except the fire sprinkler heads are kept open always – they are not activated by heat. Deluge fire sprinkler systems are operated by a special fire alarm that opens a valve to release the water when activated. Once the valve opens, it must be shut off manually.

Because of the potential for water damage, deluge fire sprinklers are not commonly found in homes or offices. Instead, they are used in places where rapid fire spread is a concern. You will most commonly find deluge fire sprinkler systems near high rise windows, warehouse bay entries or anywhere else where a fire could escape quickly.

Pre-Action Fire Sprinkler Systems – a pre-action fire sprinkler system is basically a combination of wet pipe and dry pipe fire sprinkler system. Basically, water is not stored in the pipes until a fire detection device detects a fire. At this point, the detection device opens a valve to let the water in before the sprinkler heads open. When the heads open, the pre-action fire sprinkler system reacts as quickly as a wet pipe fire sprinkler system.

Pre-action fire sprinkler systems are best suited for areas that are at high risk for serious water damage in the event of accidental fire sprinkler activation.
